Inspired by Saki Mafundikwa’s mention of the Ghanaian Sankofa (“return to the past”) in his bookAfrikan Alphabets: The Story of Writing in Afrika, this creative research began as an ethnological study of languages from oral traditions to graphical systems of communication. It later evolved into finding one's national identity, and the question of what role did two separate cultures morphing into one identity produce.
Society tends to ignore what isn’t innovative or helping advance our lifestyle. This project speaks to the importance of encouraging other designers to be more aware of other cultures that could benefit from our practice. Graphic design as a discipline is always changing; the new technology being created has a tremendous effect on our work.

Regional poets from Ohio and West Virginia have collaborated with graphic design students from Ohio University to produce “Women on the Line,” an event to raise awareness for My Sister’s Place, a local domestic violence shelter. Six poets will host a reading of their work at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville on Friday, March 27, as a part of Final Fridays on the Square. The reading will be held in conjunction with the opening of a poster exhibit of selected poems designed by OU students. The posters will be displayed at Stuart’s Opera House throughout April in celebration of National Poetry Month.
This project is supported in part by the Ohio River Border Initiative, a joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
